How to prevent disability risks?

What is work ability and what affects it?

Work ability is a functional entity formed by personnel, work, and the organization. Changes in operations may cause disruptions that can manifest as work ability risks among personnel.

Illness or symptoms may pose a work ability risk if they continuously disrupt daily functioning and work performance. Other recurring disruptions, such as deficiencies and ambiguities in leadership, organizational changes, operational goals, skills, division of labor, and agreed-upon practices, can also increase work ability risk.

Disruptions may manifest as increased sickness absences, changes in behavior, interpersonal problems, and conflicts related to work performance, as well as general dissatisfaction.

When prolonged and intensified, work ability risks can pose a threat of disability and the risk of needing disability pension.

What is work ability management?

An organization aims to manage disability risks and support personnel's work ability through work ability management. The goal of an organization's work ability management is to achieve a state of operation where related risks are controlled and thus acceptable. Work ability management is a comprehensive approach that supports the strategic goals of the company, including:

  • Assessing stress and risk factors threatening work ability
  • Setting clear goals and metrics for operations
  • Supporting smooth work processes and good leadership
  • Ensuring smooth occupational health collaboration
  • Supporting personnel's endurance and recovery
  • Monitoring the effectiveness and impact of operations.

We have created a work ability toolkit to assist you and your workplace in work ability management. In our work ability toolkit, you will find various tools and materials to aid in work ability management.
