General / Default image alt attribute

You should follow your own interests boldly, because if you are lucky, your career can form around your interests. Aleksi Kivimaa, who works as a junior portfolio manager, had been interested in investing already before he began his studies in the field and went on to build a career from this interest of his.

What have you studied and can you tell us about your career path to your current position?

I graduated from Aalto University with an MBA in 2020. My major was finance.

Even before my studies, I was interested in investing and actively invested in shares, which made financing and investment natural study choices. During my studies, I got my first contact with the investment industry when I was doing private equity reporting for an asset management company.

I originally came to Elo as a trainee analyst. After my internship, I started as a full-time analyst. I still work on the same things, but my responsibilities have increased over time.

What are your key tasks?

My job is to find new venture capital investments, analyse and select them, and manage the existing portfolio. At first, I was more in an assisting role to portfolio managers, but with experience, my responsibilities have grown and I’m also responsible for larger entities nowadays.

Each year, our goal is to make a certain number of new investments that are as good as possible. Our team plans and schedules the investment processes.

What is the best thing about your current job?

My own work is very interesting and I find it challenging enough. I like the fact that I learn a lot of new things in this job all the time. The work is motivating because the impact of my work has quantifiable results. We also have an excellent team and the atmosphere at work is good.

My job description is quite independent and flexible, which suits me. The work requires analytical skills and an ability to process information and make decisions based on it. I feel that analytical skills are my greatest strength in this role. I would recommend this position to someone who is interested in investing and economics and likes to research things.
