Average processing times for pension applications
The processing time for a pension application depends on the type of pension:
- old-age pension: 2 days
- partial old-age pension: 1 day
- disability pension: 6–8 weeks (renewal applications: 3 weeks)
- survivors’ pension: 2 weeks
If you have worked abroad, the processing time is slightly longer.

Fill out and submit the pension application
Add the required attachments (e.g., appendix U or medical statement B) in the online service. We will contact you if we need additional information. -
Request a tax card
Once you have received the pension decision, request a tax card for your pension from the Tax Administration.
Old-age pension
Your old-age retirement age depends on your year of birth. You can retire at the lowest retirement age for your age group or postpone applying for a pension, in which case you will receive an increase for late retirement.

Partial old-age pension
Partial old-age pension allows you to reduce your workload before retiring on old-age pension. If you wish, you can also continue working as before and take the pension in addition to your other earnings.
Disability pension and rehabilitation subsidy
You can apply for a disability pension if you are permanently unable to work in any job. If you are temporarily unable to work in any job, you can apply for a rehabilitation subsidy.

Partial disability pension and partial rehabilitation subsidy
Partial disability pension and partial rehabilitation subsidy are intended for people whose work ability has decreased but who can still work to some extent.
If your work ability has permanently decreased, you can apply for a partial disability pension. If the decrease is temporary but lasts at least one year, you can apply for a partial rehabilitation subsidy.

Survivors’ pension for spouse and children
The survivors’ pension secures the livelihood of the spouse and children when a partner or guardian dies. The survivors’ pension consists of the surviving spouse’s pension, granted based on marriage or cohabitation, and the orphan’s pension for children under 20 years of age.
Years-of-service pension
The years-of-service pension is intended for those who have done physically or mentally demanding work for a long time. You may be eligible for a years-of-service pension if you are at least 63 years old, have a work history of at least 38 years in work that causes strain and wear, and your work ability has reduced.

Have you worked abroad?
Pension also accrues from work done abroad.If you have worked in an EU or EEA country, the United Kingdom, Switzerland or a country with a social security agreement with Finland, you can apply for a foreign pension together with your Finnish earnings-related pension using the same application. You also need to fill out the appendix U in the online service.
If you are applying for a pension from any other country than those mentioned above, you must apply for the pension directly from the pension provider of that country.
