Death of a pension recipient – instructions for relatives
On this page
Do you need to report the death of a pension recipient to the pension company?
Whether you need to report the death of a loved one depends on where the deceased lived.
Pension recipient who lived in Finland
If the pension recipient lived in Finland, you do not need to report the death to Elo. We receive the information automatically from the Digital and Population Data Services Agency within about 1–2 weeks.
Pension recipient who lived abroad
If the pension recipient lived abroad, we do not receive death information from the authorities. A close relative should report the death to Elo as soon as possible.
You can report the death by calling or sending a message via secure email.
Termination of pension payment
The pension is paid to the recipient until the end of the month of death.
We stop the pension payment when we receive notice of the recipient’s death. If the pension has been paid after the month of death, the bank will return the overpaid amount to Elo.
Survivor´s pension for spouse and children
Survivor`s pension secures the livelihood of the spouse and children when a spouse or guardian dies. Family pensions include widow’s pension and child’s pension.
