Entrepreneur's unemployment security

Different types of unemployment benefits include earnings-related allowance and, starting from 1 May 2026, general social security benefit (formerly basic unemployment allowance and labour market support).

Earnings-related unemployment allowance from the Entrepreneur Fund

You can receive earnings-related allowance if:

• You are a member of the Entrepreneur Fund
• Your YEL income is at least €15,481 in 2026

As an entrepreneur, your earnings-related unemployment allowance is based on your YEL income. The higher your income, the better your protection against unemployment. Therefore, it is important to keep your YEL income up to date. Also, make sure your insurance contributions are paid so that the employment condition accumulates.

Kela’s unemployment benefits

If you are not a member of the entrepreneurs’ unemployment fund, you can receive general social security benefit from Kela. Means-tested general support will replace the former basic unemployment allowance and labour market support starting from 1 May 2026. Means-testing means that your capital income and other income affect the amount of general support. 
Unlike the previous basic unemployment allowance, receiving general support does not require meeting the employment condition.

Did you become unemployed?

Register immediately on your first day of unemployment as a jobseeker at the Job Market. This is a prerequisite for receiving unemployment benefits.

When you stop working as an entrepreneur, apply to terminate your YEL insurance. The insurance ends on your last working day and can be terminated retroactively if necessary.
