Payment Date and Taxation of the Rehabilitation Allowance

The rehabilitation benefit, i.e. the rehabilitation allowance or the rehabilitation increment added to rehabilitation subsidy, is paid once a month on the first banking day of the month. You can see the amount and payment date of your rehabilitation allowance on the “Payment information” tab in our Online Service. In the Online Service, you can also view previously paid rehabilitation allowances and request a pension certificate for your rehabilitation allowance. We require a tax card for the taxation of the rehabilitation benefit.

When Is the First Benefit Paid?

Your first benefit is paid about a week after you receive the benefit decision or at the beginning of the month specified in the decision. After this, the payment date is always the first banking day of the month. You can see the next payment date for your rehabilitation benefit in our Online Service.

If your benefit is granted retroactively and you have received another benefit for the same period, this may be deducted from your benefit. In this case, we will issue a separate decision on the payment of the retroactive benefit.

Changing Your Bank Account

If you want to change the account to which your benefit is paid, you can do so most easily in our Online Service under the “Payment information” tab. For data protection reasons, we cannot accept changes to account numbers by phone or email.

Taxation of the Rehabilitation Benefit

The rehabilitation benefit is taxable income. We require a tax card for the taxation of the rehabilitation benefit. For the rehabilitation allowance and rehabilitation assistance, you need a benefit tax card; for the rehabilitation increment, you need a pension tax card. We do not receive tax cards for rehabilitation benefits automatically; they must always be requested from the Tax Administration. Request a tax card from the Tax Administration after you have received both the rehabilitation plan decision and the benefit decision.

Taxation of the Rehabilitation Allowance or Rehabilitation Assistance

If you have been granted a rehabilitation allowance or assistance, we need a tax card for the benefit. Request the tax card from the Tax Administration.
If your tax information has not reached us before the first payment of the rehabilitation allowance or assistance, tax will be withheld from your benefit according to tax legislation. The withholding percentage depends on the amount of the rehabilitation allowance or assistance (see table):

Rehabilitation Allowance or Assistance €/month Withholding %
5.10 – 780.00 20
780.01 – 1,230.00 25
1,230.01 – 1,680.00 30
1,680.01 – 2,340.00 35
2,340.01 – 2,760.00 40
2,760.01 – 3,690.00 45
3,690.01 – 50

Once we have received the tax card you requested from the Tax Administration, we will refund any excess tax withheld to your account within about two weeks.

Taxation of the Rehabilitation Increment

If you have been granted a rehabilitation increment, we need a tax card for a pension. The tax card must indicate that it also applies to the rehabilitation increment.

If we do not have a tax card calculated by the Tax Administration, withholding is done according to the general tax rate set by the Tax Administration (40%). Once we have received the tax card you requested from the Tax Administration, we will refund any excess tax withheld to your account within about two weeks.

Order a Tax Card After the Benefit Decision

Order a tax card from the Tax Administration after you have received both the rehabilitation plan decision and the benefit decision. The Tax Administration will notify both you and us of the tax rate. When ordering the tax card, you will need information on the amount of the rehabilitation benefit and details of your other income and withholdings.

The Tax Administration can assist you with taxation and ordering a tax card at MyTax.fi or by phone at 029 497 000. You can also visit a Tax Administration office in person.

Expense compensation, such as travel and accommodation costs, is tax-free and is not taken into account in taxation.

Pension Certificate for Rehabilitation Benefit

You can request a pension certificate showing the amount of your benefit and the benefits paid by asking for assistance in Elo Chat in our Online Service.

You may need the pension certificate, for example, when dealing with the tax office or your bank.
