Employee’s disability pension

An employee can apply for disability pensions from us if their work ability has been reduced for at least one year. A disability pension or a rehabilitation subsidy is usually applied for after a long period of sick leave, most often after the sickness allowance period granted by Kela. A partial disability pension and a partial rehabilitation subsidy are most often applied for after the partial sickness allowance granted by Kela.

How to apply for disability pensions

The employee applies for disability pensions in our online service for private customers and attaches the required documents to the application.

The employee discusses the matter with their treating physician. The treating physician issues a medical certificate B for the disability pension application. The employer has the possibility to discuss the matter, for example in an occupational health negotiation.
The employee completes the disability pension application in our online service for private customers and attaches the medical certificate B as well as a possible work ability negotiation memo.
At our request, the employer completes and submits the employer’s description to us in our online service for corporate customers.

What happens after Elo has issued the disability pension decision?

The employee receives the decision in our online service for private customers.
The employer receives information about the decision in our online service for corporate customers if the employee has been granted a pension. If the decision is a rejection or a preliminary decision, no information will appear in the online service for corporate customers. In this situation, the employer can ask the employee directly about the decision.
If the decision is positive, the employee transitions to disability pension either fully or partially, for a fixed term or permanently.
The employee can work alongside the pension within the limits of their personal income ceiling.
If the employee has received a preliminary decision on a partial disability pension or a partial rehabilitation subsidy, agree on part‑time work with the employee. After this, the employee completes the payment application in our online service for private customers and receives a separate decision on the payment of the partial disability pension or the partial rehabilitation subsidy in the online service.
We cannot take a position on legal employment relationship matters.
